Bengaluru: Semiconductor Ecosystem in Spotlight
Picture a city where a two-nanometer chip gets unveiled in one part of town while, just a few kilometres away, a 200-acre park is being carved out to build the next generation of fabs. That city is not in Taiwan or California. It is Bengaluru, and right now it is having its loudest moment yet in the global chip story.
For decades Bengaluru was known as India’s software capital. That reputation is quietly being rewritten. Design houses, packaging startups, government-backed parks, and international investors are converging here at the same time, turning the city into one of the most closely watched semiconductor hubs in the world.
A City Building Its Own Chip Corridor

Karnataka’s semiconductor ambitions are no longer confined to PowerPoint decks. The state government has approved investments worth roughly Rs 23,000 crore in semiconductor and advanced electronics manufacturing over the past two years, and a dedicated 200-acre Semiconductor Park is coming up in Phase-1 of KWIN City near Bengaluru. State officials have indicated the park is expected to be operational by December this year, with an emphasis on chip design, packaging, testing, and electronics production working together under one ecosystem rather than as scattered projects.
Officials have also spoken about weaving small and medium enterprises into this supply chain, a signal that the plan is not just about attracting a handful of large plants but about building depth across the entire value chain, from raw material handling to finished packaged chips.
Global Design Giants Keep Choosing Bengaluru

What sets Bengaluru apart from many newer semiconductor hubs is its head start in design. The city is already home to more than 100 chip design companies, ranging from multinational R&D centres to homegrown fabless startups. This density matters because chip design work, unlike fabrication, does not require billion-dollar cleanrooms; it thrives on talent concentration, and Bengaluru has been accumulating that talent for years through its broader technology industry.
Recent milestones underline this momentum. Karnataka’s government has highlighted the unveiling of a 2-nanometer semiconductor chip manufactured in Bengaluru, a marker of just how advanced the design and prototyping work happening in the city has become. Union government officials have separately pointed to a global talent gap of roughly one million professionals in the semiconductor sector, arguing that Indian hubs like Bengaluru are positioned to help fill a meaningful share of that gap over the coming years.
Policy Push and Global Equipment Demand Are Aligning

Bengaluru’s rise is not happening in isolation. It is riding a broader global wave. Industry body SEMI has projected that worldwide semiconductor manufacturing equipment sales will hit a record USD 165.9 billion in 2026, climbing further to around USD 229.5 billion by 2028. That would mark five straight years of growth in chip equipment spending, fuelled by demand tied to artificial intelligence, advanced logic chips, high-bandwidth memory, and next-generation packaging techniques.
India is trying to position itself to capture a slice of that spending, and Karnataka’s chief minister has framed Bengaluru’s future around deep technology more broadly, not semiconductors alone. At a recent nanotechnology conference held in the city, the state’s leadership described plans to position Bengaluru as a hub spanning nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, and quantum technologies together, arguing that these fields increasingly overlap in real industrial applications such as advanced manufacturing and next-generation electronics.
On the national stage, the India Semiconductor Mission is preparing to host SEMICON India 2026 in September, an event built around the theme of moving from silicon to complete systems. Karnataka’s growing base of design firms and its upcoming semiconductor park make Bengaluru a natural point of reference whenever these national conversations about supply chain resilience come up.
Talent Development Is Becoming a Bottleneck and an Opportunity

Every conversation about scaling India’s chip industry eventually circles back to one constraint: skilled manpower. Building fabs and design centres is one challenge, but staffing them with people trained in VLSI design, verification, and chip layout is a separate and equally pressing problem. This is exactly why specialised training has started to matter as much as the factories themselves.
Cities in the National Capital Region have also stepped into this gap, with a growing number of institutes now offering a focused VLSI course in Noida aimed at building job-ready chip design skills. As Bengaluru’s design houses expand and new hubs like the KWIN City semiconductor park come online, this kind of structured, industry-aligned training is likely to play a growing role in feeding the talent pipeline that companies across the country, including those based in Bengaluru, will need over the next several years.
Industry events such as the IEEE Bangalore Semicon Conclave, which brings together fabless startups, EDA companies, and IP providers, are also becoming platforms where this talent conversation plays out in real time, alongside technical discussions on chiplets and next-generation semiconductor design.
